Electric Scooters Cruise Control – Do you have it?

Having cruise control option on your electric scooter can be a great benefit. On long rides, especially on a straight line ride. It can greatly improve your ride and avoid hand fatigue. Instead of having to press the acceleration button all the time, on most electric scooters, the cruise control is activated by a 5-second continuous press of the acceleration.

But how do you switch it off?

If you ever drove a car, you know how. Pressing any of the brake or acceleration buttons will switch the cruise control off.

Cruise Control not working?

Some electric scooters, including mine, have the possibility to permanently switch off or switch on the cruise control. Get out your user manual and check if this is the case.

On my scooter, the cruise control can be switched off by pressing the start button while pressing the brake button. This way, I can get into the advanced settings where I can set the cruise control, 0-start option and set the speed limit.

Here are the exact steps (for UScooters / E-Twow Scooters):

1. Turn on the electric scooter
2. Press the brake lever all way down and keep it there during this operation
3. Press the [POWER] button
4. At this step, P1 should appear on the scooter’s display
5. To choose the Cruise Control option navigate to P2 using the [LIGHT] button
6. One P2 is on the display, press S – [SET] button to turn it ON or OFF
7. In order to save this setting and get out of the settings menu release the brake lever
8. That’s all, the Cruise Control should be turned ON/OFF

These are the instructions only for UScooters and E-Twow models.

For Xiaomi Mi M365, the cruise control option can be turned on/off by using its custom mobile application. Check the screenshot.

Should I get one with Cruise Control?

If you have a long road to work/school and it’s mainly straight, I suggest having one with cruise control. Cruise control is available on most premium electric scooters which you will need to get a long range anyway.

If you are only using the electric scooter as a last-mile vehicle, you won’t need cruise control.

How does it work?

Cruise control option is borrowed from cars. Most electric scooters use a similar algorithm as cars do to maintain a constant speed. The scooter’s controller uses the signals received from sensors as input and it’s able to control the engine’s power. This way, you can enjoy a smooth ride without having to worry about hand fatigue and tension.

Another advantage of the cruise control is increased battery life. A vehicle uses less energy when riding uniformly than by constant accelerations and decelerations. Maintaining a constant speed the battery will last more and you can enjoy longer rides.

Sensors used to maintain speed:

• Engine RPM sensor (gives the speed you are riding with)
• Battery voltage and health
• Power used (used to adapt speed when going uphill/downhill)

Does it take into account terrain level?

Yes, it does. If you go uphill, the cruise control will give more power to the electric engine in order to maintain a constant speed. When going downhill, the controller will adjust the engine to use less power and to regenerate some power from braking if possible.

Is it safe?

Cruise control is fun because you don’t have to worry about keeping a constant speed while your ride. This increases the other senses and you can give more attention to road and obstacles.

However, manufacturers don’t recommend activating the cruise control at speeds over 12 miles/hour.

Here are my safety tips for cruise control:

• Don’t use it when having low speed
• Don’t use it in crowded areas
• Don’t use it when taking turns
• Don’t forget about it, most people get used to it and if they encounter an obstacle they get scared

Depending on your usual ride you can decide if you need an electric scooter with or without cruise control. The decision is up to you.

Looking at various electric scooters available online I noticed that the producers will explicitly mention this option if they have it. Most of the times, in the title of the product.
